Why Ghost Was Chosen As The Villain For Ant-Man And The Wasp, According To Kevin Feige
The next Marvel movie is almost here and coming on the heels of Avengers: Infinity War nobody knows quite what to expect from the heroes or the villain. Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the debut of Evangeline Lily as the Wasp but it will also be the debut of an all-new antagonist in the character named Ghost. She looks unlike anything that we've seen in the MCU before, and as it turns out, that's exactly why the character was chosen. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige recently explained that after the sorts of villains we'd seen in the Marvel universe so far this year, they knew Ant-Man and the Wasp needed to do something unique. According to Feige...
It was our producer Stephen Broussard and Peyton Reed and our writers who are looking for a different kind of villain, a different, unique villain. We knew this film will be coming off of Thanos, will be coming off of Killmonger, how do we find a villain that is very different and very unique? And when people see the movie, I think they'll see that we found it in Ghost.
While Kevin Feige didn't go into detail about what makes Ghost so unique at last week's world premiere for Ant-Man and the Wasp, it's not that difficult to see why they felt a need to do something different. For starters, Ant-Man is just a very different corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it certainly doesn't shy away from superhero action, it also considers humor to be a much more important element in its storytelling. As such, an intergalactic alien with designs on destroying half the universe would be a little heavy for the first Ant-Man and Wasp team-up.
Of course, Ghost isn't simply a different sort of Marvel villain when compared to other recent films. The version of Ghost we're getting is different than the one that is traditionally seen in the comics. For starters, Ghost is traditionally a male character, who works as a sort of industrial saboteur for hire. The movie's version of Ghost is a woman played by Hannah John-Kamen who steals the tech that allows her to phase through solid objects from Pym Technologies. At this point, we don't really know what her motivations for doing this are, but it seems that the reasons will link back to our main characters in some way.
Another change we can probably expect with Ant-Man and the Wasp is that it will be the first Marvel movie this year to not make a billion dollars. That's not to say it won't be a huge hit. Ant-Man and the Wasp hits theaters Friday.
