Anne Hathaway Says Her Les Miserables Weight Loss Made Her Sick

Anne Hathaway Says Her Les Miserables Weight Loss Made Her Sick

Anne Hathaways heart-wrenching rendition of Fantine in Les Misrables in 2012 may have earned her an Oscar win, but it was not without sacrifice on her part. The actress recently reflected back her 25-pound weight drop to play the French seamstress turned desperate prostitute, and how it negatively affected her health. In her words:

Id lost an unhealthy amount of weight in two weeks. I didnt know anything about nutrition. I taxed my body, and my brain bore the brunt of it for a while. I just felt very anxious and very lost at that time. That weight loss was not a long-term good thing for my health, and it took a really long time to come back from it. And I was still really sick because of it.

Looks like Anne Hathaways behind-the-scenes prep for the big screen musical was no glitzier than her somber role. Her intense transformation certainly added to the believability to Fantines incredibly difficult life as a French woman who is abandoned by the man who impregnates her, forcing her to sell her hair, teeth and body to support her daughter, Cosette. But the toll it took on her physical and mental health ended up to be more taxing than she probably expected.

When Anne Hathaway opened up about her role in Les Misrables during an interview with PEOPLEs Editor-in-chief Jess Cagle (via Entertainment Weekly), she also spoke about how this took some joy away from her Oscar win in 2013. The actress said she was still coming back from the intense weight loss when she appeared on the award show, along with dealing with a bit of an identity crisis following her recent 30th birthday and marriage to her current husband.

She explained that sometimes the most positive accomplishments can create emotional upheavals, which she felt on Oscar night. Anne Hathaway told Jess Cagle that at the time she was on display for the world, as she won her Best Supporting Actress gold trophy, she didnt know who she was and felt uncomfortable on that stage and in her win.

The actress joined the likes of Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth and her Serenity co-star Matthew McConaughey, who have each lost an incredible amount of weight to fill a role. Luckily for Hathaway, her hard work didnt go unnoticed and she will go down in history as an Oscar winner and Les Misrables Fantine.

After working with one another in 2014s Interstellar, Hathaway and McConaughey have returned to the big screen in crazy thriller Serenity, which is in theaters now. The actress will also star alongside Rebel Wilson in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake The Hustle in May and crime drama The Last Thing He Wanted with Ben Affleck and Willem Dafoe later this year.

Funny, because most of us were really sick anytime we saw Anne Hathaway out on the press tour for Les Miserables! When Anne was playing Fantine, most of us took it as Oscar bait. Not only did Anne get a G.I. Jane haircut for the role, she also lost 25 pounds. I didn't know Anne had 25 pounds to lose, and apparently her body didn't either.

Captain America: Civil War Almost Had A Very Different End Battle

Captain America: Civil War Almost Had A Very Different End Battle

The Russos' Captain America: Civil War featured a fair number of narrative twists and turns, including the reveal that Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) murdered the hidden Winter Soldiers instead of using them to topple world governments. It was a major plot shift to make room for the big showdown between Cap (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), but it also turns out that there was originally a bigger plan for those badass Hydra assassins in the film's climax. Scott Adkins, who was supposed to play one of those soldiers, opened up in a recent interview and explained:

Well again they say, you know I was almost in Civil War. There was a part. The, uh, super soldiers, they were meant to be a bigger part of the movie at one point. And I met with the Russos about that, but they decided to lessen those parts and make it more about Captain America and Winter Soldier and Iron Man, right? That fight at the end. So that didn't happen. I was devastated at the time, but obviously they remembered me and Doctor Strange came up.

Talk about a drastically different version of the story. It sounds like in its original incarnation, Captain America: Civil War featured a bigger brawl between the heroes and the squad of highly-trained Winter Soldiers hidden at the Siberian outpost. That was an early version of the climax, but it eventually changed when the Russos decided to streamline the story and make it more about the hero-on-hero combat. However, as Scott Adkins noted during his appearance on the Empire podcast, he did eventually get to star as a henchman in Doctor Strange instead (which led to him kicking Benedict Cumberbatch in the chest), so he can't be too upset about the whole thing.

In the movie's final cut, the Winter Soldiers featured in Captain America: Civil War acted more like red herrings than real bad guys. They were teased as the main threat that Cap and Bucky needed to stop, and Iron Man showed up at the end of the movie to lend a hand. However, once the three heroes arrived at the Siberian facility, Zemo revealed that he actually killed all of the remaining soldiers, with the real intent of pitting the Marvel heroes against each other upon the realization that Bucky killed Tony's parents. You can check out that full scene, below.

Of course, at the end of the day, there's a strong case to be made that this was the right call. Captain America: Civil War is regarded as one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe films to date by many fans, with a significant portion of the film's praise stemming from its more contained third act that pits heroes against each other instead of heroes against traditional villains. We don't know precisely what that original version of the story would've looked like, but Civil War definitely works well the way it is.

With all of that said, we will see where Cap, Bucky and Iron Man go next when The Avengers assemble once again for Avengers: Infinity War on April 27. Make sure to catch the latest MCU adventure when it finally debuts, and take a glance at our movie premiere guide to see what other big movies are coming this year!

The first was about his battles in World War II, the second was fighting his old friend Winter Soldier, and the third was Civil War and a battle with his former ally Iron Man. However, there were a ton of fun stories in Captain America's past to choose from for a lighter tone.

The Reboot Of Transformers May Not Be Happening After All

The Reboot Of Transformers May Not Be Happening After All

The Transformers franchise currently consists of five movies, with a Bumblebee spin-off slated for release later this year. While the majority of the films in the series have been very successful, the later entries have been seeing some diminishing returns, finally coming to a head in Transformers: The Last Knight, which underperformed (compared to the rest of the series) at the box office. This gave some credence to the rumor that the franchise was in for a reboot following Bumblebee, but now Hasbro is stepping in to let people know not to believe everything they read. According to the Hasbro Brand Manager...

Don't believe what you hear, don't worry.

Not exactly the most illuminating statement in the world, but Hasbro clearly doesn't want people to believe that there's a reboot on the way right now. Recently, a report dropped claiming that Hasbro said at the Toy Fair 2018 during its investor preview that the Transformers franchise would be rebooted following the release of Bumblebee and that Hasbro would have more creative control over the series moving forward. In addition, Transformers 6 -- which was originally scheduled to release June 18, 2019 -- was removed from Paramount-Hasbro's film slate. A grain of salt was still necessary, but considering the lackluster performance of the sequels both critically and commercially, it was a believable report.

Well, Hasbro's now telling you not to believe it and not to worry. According to Bleeding Cool, someone at Toy Fairs' three-hour Hasbro presentation asked about the new reports that Transformers was being rebooted. The Transformers brand manager said "don't believe what you hear," and left it at that. For what it's worth, Transformers: The Last Knight did set up another sequel, and a writers room was established to develop more films, but it's possible that Paramount and Hasbro are cooling it on the franchise for the time being.

So, is Transformers being rebooted? It's tough to say at this point. Hasbro certainly can't go around saying there's a reboot when there's still one more Transformers movie on the schedule. Otherwise, why should people go see it if it doesn't even matter to the series? We'll have to keep waiting for more updates in the future, but Hasbro does seem to be increasing its movie output. The toy company has movies for G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and Dungeons & Dragons in the works, as well as an untitled event film with Paramount. How exactly Transformers will play into that is anyone's guess at the moment.

There's bound to be more updates surrounding the fate of Transformers so stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated with more information as soon as it becomes available. For all movies hitting theaters in the near future, check out our 2018 movie release guide.
