How To Train Your Dragon Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The End Of The Trilogy

The first How to Train Your Dragon movie came out almost a full decade ago to rave reviews. It was followed by a sequel that was equally lauded by both critics and fans. This weekend, the third film in the trilogy hits theaters. Has the franchise been able to stick the landing? In a word, yes. Team CinemaBlend checked out How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World this week, and we all pretty much loved it. Mike Reyes wrote the official review for the site, giving the movie four and half stars and warning everybody to bring tissues...

For a series thats never taken a shortcut, and always remembered to hit the right emotional beats without being manipulative, this grand finale does not break from tradition. The action is still thrilling, the laughs are still heartwarming and a bit cheeky, and when all is said and done, you are going to cry.

CinemaBlend's glowing review is far from the only one. The vast majority of the critics who have seen The Hidden World have had nothing but good things to say about the film. It's a real ending to the story that began with the first film, with characters seeing satisfying and real conclusions.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is astonishingbittersweet and beautifully animated. The story is a fitting end for the franchise, which actually goes on for 12 books in its literary counterpart, but the visual marvel is what will be worth shelling out to see the flick on the big screen.

Is there any downside at all to How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World? While Mike and Jessica thought the film was close to flawless, CinemaBlend video producer Katie Hughes wouldn't go quite that far. She actually felt the movie started out a little slow, though it did eventually find its footing, and by the end she was completely on board too...

Hidden World was the perfect conclusion to Hiccup and Toothless story from middle to end. The beginning felt slow and had a rather obvious and repetitive we have dragons! narrative. However, once things pushed past that, the movie was a perfect blend of Hiccup and Toothless' deep (and adorable) relationship, their need to mature and lead lives of their own and, of course, all the dragons! It was a finale that had me both in tears and absolutely satisfied.

My own opinion on The Hidden World is probably closer to that of Katie than the others. While I was absolutely on board for the entire movie, the early buzz for The Hidden World had me hyped up for something amazing, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't think the movie really was all that stunning, until it was...

The general CinemaBlend opinion is in pretty universal agreement that How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a good movie, it's just a question of exactly how good we're talking here. Maybe it's perfect, maybe not, but either way, it's worth seeing and closing out this trilogy the right way.

Dog Days Actually Cast All Of Its Canine Characters Before Any Of The Humans

In case you couldn't tell by the title, dogs are a pretty crucial part of the new movie Dog Days. The movie weaves together five different stories set in Los Angeles, and one key thing all of them have in common is a special four-legged friend. This obviously made it very important for the production to find the best of the best when it came to animal talent -- and director Ken Marino recently told me that they were so key that they came on-board before any of the human stars:

I met some animal trainers, dog trainers, and we hired this guy, Mark Gordon, and he was great! And I said, 'Who you are your rock stars? Who are the dogs you're like, 'There's something special about this dog.' And so he immediately showed me a picture of the dog that plays Charlie, whose name I'm forgetting right now, but a great dog - the Goldendoodle. He was just quirky and weird and funny and awkward, and perfect. So I was like, 'Well, tell me the things that he does, and we'll write towards that.' And then we sort of started casting around that dog. The dogs were actually cast before the human actors were cast.

Dog Days held its domestic press junket this past week in Los Angeles, and it was during my sit down with Ken Marino that I learned about the unique casting strategy that the romantic comedy took collecting its ensemble. Evidently the film found it necessary to not only prioritize getting the dogs before bringing in the humans, but they even had an important impact on the script -- as their special abilities wound up dictating what they would ultimately be doing in the story.

The dog Ken Marino singles out, Charlie, is the one that is paired with Adam Pally's character, Dax, in the film. Dax is a lazy, irresponsible layabout, and he finds his lifestyle upended when his sister (Jessica St. Clair) and her husband (Thomas Lennon) have twins and need him to take care of their pet. It's a problematic situation because Dax lives in a building with a "no animals" policy, but also because Charlie is the kind of dog who does what he wants when he wants to: he'll flop right on top of Dax at a random moment, take forever on walks sniffing things, and wake him up early in the morning. It's definitely a part that requires a trained animal, and the dog that plays Charlie does a wonderful job.

In addition to its collection of canine actors, Dog Days stars Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell, Adam Pally, Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Bass, Ron Cephas Jones, Finn Wolfhard, Eva Longoria, Rob Corddry, Tig Notaro, and more, and arrives in theaters this weekend.




In summary, Dog Days feels like a missed opportunity. It deserves credit for avoiding the kinds of gratuitous gross-out gags that fill so many PG-13 and R-rated comedies these days. But in the areas where Dog Days goes astray, its content issues, ahem, dog it just enough to keep it from being a solid family movie-night choice.


You won't be surprised by its sentiment or observations, but this well-cast celebration of the timeless bond between humans and dogs in "Dog Days"

Lady Gaga Fans Aren't Happy About Her Globes Loss

Lady Gaga was expected by many to win the Golden Globe Award For Best Actress in a drama tonight. That didn't happen. The fact that Glenn Close took the award home for her role in The Wife was a surprise to a lot of people, including, based on her expression, Glenn Close herself. However, Lady Gaga's fans are far from happy with the situation. Social media is more than a little upset with what happened, as Lady Gaga fans who were expecting a win feel like there's been a terrible mistake.

While there have been numerous great roles in the movies this year and there wasn't necessarily one performance that was expected to simply walk away with every award, Lady Gaga's performance as Ally in A Star is Born was viewed by many as a frontrunner. Since the Golden Globes are frequently seen as a stepping stone to the Oscars, those that did expect Gaga to be the one to beat at the Academy Awards assumed tonight would make that status official with the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. Those that did assume the win was a foregone conclusion are in shock.

There are always going to be people who throw in with one nominee or another and feel disappointed when their chosen actor doesn't win. Of course, Lady Gaga has built up a strong following of fans that predates her actual performance in A Star is Born by quite a wide margin. Those fans are more than a little upset with the situation. For them, tonight was supposed to be a coronation, and the fact that it didn't turn out that way is incredibly frustrating.

Of course, while the Golden Globe winners and the Oscar winners are frequently the same, that's not always the case. That means that Lady Gaga still has a chance of winning the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Of course, in the end, it's all really just about who you thought was best, which means if you think Lady Gaga was the best acting performance of the year, you can still feel that way. No award is going to change things.

A Star is Born was expected to win several awards, not simply the Best Actress award for Lady Gaga, but all it came away with tonight was an award for Best Original Song. Is that a precursor of things to come at the Oscars or, like many Lady Gaga fans believe, evidence that the Golden Globes is clueless? We'll find out when the Academy Awards get here next month.
