A Detail About Harry Potter's Scar Has Fans Magically Mystified

Harry Potter's trademark lightning bolt scar may have a deeper meaning than just a cool design. That particular trivia may not be new to everyone, but it got the Potter fandom debating again, this time about the real reason Harry's scar is shaped that way:

The mischief is never managed when it comes to Harry Potter fans! They are always discovering new things about the series, even more than 20 years after J.K. Rowling's first book was published. It keeps the magic alive for all of us.

This particular theory has actually been making the rounds since at least 2015, when it was posted on a Reddit thread, but like many things on the Internet, it can take a while to reach The Rest Of Us.

Fans have been responding to the tweet above with some surprised reaction shots, although some are questioning the validity. One fan asked about the source of the killing curse hand movement. Was it from Pottermore, J.K. Rowling's official site? Whether the movement is canon or not, it looks like the tweet image on the right was picked up from Wiki.

Also, what's official in the Harry Potter world at large and what's used in the Harry Potter films is often quite different. Some fans pointed out that Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) didn't seem to use that hand movement on screen when trying to kill Harry (Daniel Radcliffe). Also, if that's the correct hand movement, then why is it backwards on Harry's forehead?

This little detail may even be news to J.K. Rowling herself, and more on the line of a fan theory than official canon. As Digital Spy shared, Rowling explained why she chose a lightning bolt scar shape for Harry during a fan chat in 2007. At the time, she wrote, she just thought it was cool. "I couldn't have my hero sport a doughnut-shaped scar." (Sidenote: Homer Simpson should totally have a doughnut-shaped scar. The Simpsons, get on this!)

Honestly, I prefer the idea that the lightning bolt shape came from the wand movement, rather than it just looking "cool." It adds an extra layer of meaning, and we know that the Harry Potter universe is filled with deeper meanings. J.K. Rowling usually has a reason for everything, and sometimes she goes into detail on Twitter or through Pottermore.

Sometimes the revelations are things fans could've done without -- like knowing about the Hogwarts bathroom situation, pre-plumbing. But more often than not, fans are voracious about Potter intel.

Of course, J.K. Rowling is also revealing more about the Harry Potter universe through the Fantastic Beasts movies, which are all prequels to Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling is the screenwriter for all of the movies. So far, two have been released in theaters. The third movie's production was just delayed, but there are still meant to be five films in that franchise, leading up to the big duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. That's long before Harry Potter was born, but there are plenty of new details to be learned in the films.

Fans are already reeling from the shockers of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. J.K. Rowling promised answers are coming in Fantastic Beasts 3, which is on track to film late this year for a release date either in 2020 or 2021. Losing The Captain America Role Was The Hardest Moment In Wilson Bethels Career

Depending on how Avengers 4 goes, Chris Evans may potentially be saying goodbye to his iconic role as Captain America after almost 10 years as the first Avenger. In the strenuous casting process that ended in Evans' favor years ago, there was another actor neck and neck with him before he nabbed the role: Wilson Bethel. The actor makes his debut today on Marvel Television's Daredevil season 3 as the classic villain Bullseye, but there was a time when he felt he lost out on the role of a lifetime. Bethel auditioned, screen tested, screen tested again and even wore Cap's suit, leading him to believe he might be the leader of the MCU's Avengers, but you know what happened instead. In Bethel's words:

I think it was like one or two days later that they made the announcement that Chris Evans got the part. So, to be perfectly honest, that was one of the hardest moments in my professional career. And it spun me out for a while to be honest with you. But I'm also a firm believer that things happen as they're supposed to, and obviously, Chris did an incredible job in that role. And my life, while it hasn't brought me to lead the Avengers, has been really rich and rewarding in other ways. So, I can't spend too much time lamenting it. And honestly, just the fact that things have kind of come full circle in a way, and I still get to be a dude in a suit, is pretty exciting.

At the time when Wilson Bethel auditioned for Captain America, he was a relative newcomer to the industry with just a few acting credits, so his ability to get so close to nabbing the role is quite impressive. But Chris Evans had already lead quite a few successful films, so he was likely a better bet for the studio still in the early days of forming their expansive MCU. In Bethel's interview with ComicBook.com, he explained the casting process in depth, detailing how he screen tested with many other guys for the role, who they all ended up being released at the end of it except for him, making him a close contender for Steve Rogers.

To lose out at such a high-profile role when he was so close sounds like a tough break, but Wilson Bethel has kept busy, primarily in the realm of television since Chris Evans has played Captain America on the big screen. Bethel is best known for his role on the CW's Hart of Dixie from 2011 to 2015, and has also been on the HBO miniseries Generation Kill, The Astronaut Wives Club and How to Get Away With Murder.

Eight years later, he makes his way back to the MCU as a compelling villain on Netflix's most successful television series, Daredevil. Wilson Bethel plays FBI Agent Benjamin 'Dex' Poindexter, a.k.a. Bullseye, now available to binge on Netflix.

Bryan Singer's Red Sonja Is Now On Hold

Following the success of Wonder Woman in 2017, Millennium Media announced that it would finance and produce a reboot of Red Sonja, which is a project that has been in some stage of development for many years. Then last year, director Bryan Singer became attached to direct the film and a new Red Sonja looked closer than its ever been to actually happening. But now Bryan Singers Red Sonja is officially on hold.

In comments to Deadline, Millennium Films stated that Red Sonja is not on its slate at the moment and that the film is not for sale at the European Film Market, the trade fair that is currently going on during the Berlin International Film Festival. This move comes after Red Sonja was on Millennium Films slate just last November at the American Film Market where director Bryan Singer pitched his vision for the film to international buyers.

But a few months time clearly changed things for Millennium and now the project has been pushed to the back burner. No reason was given for why Red Sonja has been put on hold or when we might expect to hear more about the projects future.

While it might be easy to assume that this move has to do with the various allegations made about Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer, who was set to helm the film, he has not been officially removed from his role, for which he is reportedly commanding a huge payday.

Although the cast for Red Sonja had not been set, the film was expected to shoot this year in Bulgaria after languishing in development hell for a decade. Now Red Sonjas stay in development hell has been extended. We are left to once again wait and see what happens. and if this current iteration of Red Sonja makes it to the finish line someday or undergoes behind the scenes reshuffling before trying again.

This is a big move for Millennium Films, because the studio clearly envisioned Red Sonja as a title with a lot of potential. In an age where female-led films are not only more accepted, but have proven lucrative, a movie about a vengeful badass redheaded heroine could really connect with audiences. Red Sonja would also be a big-budget action-fantasy movie, exactly the type of thing audiences might be thirsting for after Game of Thrones wraps up.

Red Sonja is based on a character that first appeared in Marvel Comics Conan the Barbarian and made her big screen debut in a 1985 film starring Brigitte Nielsen. In her original story, Red Sonja suffered the murder of her family and a sexual assault before rising up to seek revenge thanks to some powers granted to her by a goddess.
