In case you missed it, yesterday was Star Wars Day, and the entire world got in on the celebration. Though it was a joyous occasion for self-respecting Star Wars geeks around the globe, it was also a time to look back and remember members of the Star Wars family who have left us in recent years. Specifically, Billie Lourd took to social media and shared a photo with her mother, the late Carrie Fisher, on the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it was absolutely heartwarming. Check out the photo, below.
In all honesty, that pretty much captures everything that fans have come to know and love about Carrie Fisher's public persona. Brash, fun, and downright quirky, the Princess/General Leia actress became as widely beloved for her off-screen antics as she was for her portrayal of the legendary Star Wars heroine. That picture seems to show Billie Lourd and Carrie Fisher messing around between takes on the set of Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it definitively serves as a firm reminder that we lost a valued member of the Star Wars family when Fisher passed away in 2016.
Of course, there's another element of Carrie Fisher's legacy that isn't necessarily addressed by that Instagram post. The Star Wars _franchise is generally moving in a new direction that will hand over the hero responsibilities to a younger regeneration of character, but the saga is doing it in a slow and steady fashion. The Force Awakens phased out Han Solo, and _The Last Jedi phased out Luke Skywalker, but Leia is still part of the overarching story of this current trilogy. At this stage, we still have no idea what the Star Wars franchise will do to work around the untimely loss of Ms. Fisher (whether that may involve writing her out of the story, recasting her, or digitally replacing her), but it looks like that's one of those sad-but-important conversations that will need to take place over the course of the next year.
Of course, for now, the focus has shifted away from Leia and moved to the love of her life. The next project on the Star Wars docket is Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story, which will take audiences back in time to flesh out the earlier years of the smuggler's life.

Rupert Wyatts Gambit Would Have Been A Mutant Mob Movie
Some superhero films face an unobstructed path on their journey to production, while others face numerous obstacles. Gambit falls into the latter category, as its been over four years since the project was officially announced, and its still in development hell. Captive States Rupert Wyatt was the first director hired to helm Gambit, and his version of the movie would have seen the eponymous protagonist, played by Channing Tatum, in New Orleans and involved with other mutants in a mob environment. As he put it:
What I do know is that Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin had an amazing idea of what that movie was going to be, and Josh Zeutemer, the writer, as well. It was terrific, it was a really exciting sort of Godfather with mutants set in the world of New Orleans with different gangs.
Rupert Wyatt added that Gambit would have taken place from the 1970s to the present day and been about the notion of what it means to belong, tribalism in this bayou-like environment among these mutant gangs. The X-Men film franchise hasnt been shy about telling stories set in the past, which began with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and has been a mainstay of the First Class era main films. The focus on New Orleans criminal underworld would also have been fitting given Gambits past as a thief in the comics.
Youll recall that last fall, X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg said that Gambit would be a romantic comedy highlighting the characters hustling and womanizing ways. That doesnt sound anything like what Rupert Wyatt had planned, although one would imagine that Remy LeBeau would still have had a love interest. Rupert Wyatt also clarified in his interview with Collider that Channing Tatum sort of worked on the script to make it into a romantic comedy, and while Wyatt liked what he read, it was very different from what he was involved in.
As for why Rupert Wyatts Gambit never moved forward, the director claims its because the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot was a critical and commercial bomb. With just 10 weeks before Gambit was supposed to begin filming, 20th Century Fox slashed the budget quite considerably, leading to the brakes being pumped. Wyatt departed Gambit in September 2015, just three months after he signed on to direct. In the following years, both Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski were separately hired as Gambits replacement directors, but both men ultimately left as well, with Liman withdrawing because he didnt care for the script and Verbinski exiting due to scheduling conflicts.
With only days remaining until the Disney and Fox merger closes, leading to (among many other things) the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties finally residing at Marvel Studios, its unclear if Gambit will ever be made. A Channing Tatum-led Gambit movie, whether its a mob movie or a romantic comedy, could still work even if the X-Men franchise was rebooted, but its possible Marvel and Disney would prefer putting out a more conventional, ensemble X-Men movie first. In any case, considering that the characters only theatrical appearance so far has been in the critically-derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Rupert Wyatts Gambit movie sounds like it would have treated him much better.

Why Deadpool 2 Decided To Cut Down The Screentime Of One X-Men Character

Deadpool 2 brings a number of popular X-Men characters to the big screen for the first time, but one major name was originally going to have a much larger part than what ended up on screen. Jack Kesy plays the popular X-Men villain Black Tom Cassidy in the new movie. He's only seen early in the film when Deadpool finds himself locked in the Icebox, but the writers of Deadpool 2 recently revealed that in an earlier version of the movie, Cassidy's part continued on from there, however, the film's budget basically only allowed for one major CGI bad guy, and they chose the other one. We thought we were overstuffing the movie a little bit with too many antagonists, too many villains. And also budgetarily, it was very, very expensive, because his powers are to move organic material around --- the entire orphanage, and the trees, everything was flying around, and the hailstorms of wood --- it was really cool, but it was also really, really expensive, and we just thought, we prefer to throw that money to the CG of Juggernaut as opposed to Black Tom. So he got reduced --- and then killed, which I know a lot of people are probably going to be upset about, but we can always go back in time and make anybody alive, so perhaps he'll come back. Jack did a great job with the character in limited time. That was Black Tom's role, and it did reduce a little bit, unfortunately.
Originally, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reveal to Comicbook.com, Black Tom was going to act as a devil on the shoulder of Firefist, pushing him to turn bad. However, it was apparently decided that Black Tom's mutant powers were going to be expensive to create, and instead the decision was made to focus on Juggernaut rather than Black Tom. Juggernaut ends up playing much that same role in the final version of Deadpool 2.
It's interesting to learn that Black Tom Cassidy was originally going to have a much larger role because this was the character that had been rumored to have been cut entirely from the film before it was released. While it turned out Black Tom wasn't cut out, the fact that the part was so greatly reduced was probably where the rumor got started in the first place.
I'm certainly glad Black Tom wasn't cut, as he was a solid target for Deadpool jokes while he was on screen. While it sounds like the part was cut down early in the process, if there's any of this additional footage around, hopefully, it will make some future DVD release and we can see some of what could have been.
