Atom Tickets Wants Subscribers To Break Up With MoviePass

Although MoviePass positioned itself as a major game changer for the movie ticketing industry, the subscription service has had a rough couple of days. Last Thursday night, MoviePass briefly shut down due to straight up running out of money, requiring parent company Helios and Matheson Analytics to borrow $5 million to keep MoviePass afloat. Then Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the weekend's big blockbuster, was blacked out from MoviePass, which, as CEO Mitch Lowe, said in a public statement, is no different from limited access to content on streaming platforms. Now competitor Atom Tickets has announced a sweepstakes enticing people to "break up" with MoviePass.

Officially titled the "Break Up Sweepstakes," Atom Tickets announced that this special event is meant to "help ease the pain for MoviePass members as the service suffers from repeated technical outages, blockbuster blackouts, and an uncertain future." With that in mind, participants can enter the for a chance to win 365 days of free movies (valued at $4,380) by tweeting a picture of their cut-up MoviePass card to the Atom Tickets account with the hashtag #MOVIEPAST and #ATOMSWEEPS. Atom Tickets subscribers can enter the contest starting today, and it will conclude on August 31. Those who aren't using Atom Tickets are also eligible for a special offer this week only, as if they can get a free ticket upon purchasing a ticket on the Atom Tickets mobile app using the code WEGOTYOU.

Clearly Atom Tickets is taking advantage of MoviePass' recent misfortunes by enticing MoviePass subscribers to cut ties with that service and hop aboard the Atom Tickets train. This comes at a time when MoviePass is suffering through financial troubles, a sharp contrast to last year when it lowered its prices. Last month, MoviePass implemented Peak Pricing algorithm (which is similar to Uber's surge pricing) for high-demand movies, although that also came at the same time as expanding to premium showings and the ability for a user to bring guests. It's also been announced that just like Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Christopher Robin and The Meg won't be available on MoviePass when they hit theaters in an effort to not lose more money.

It's worth noting that MoviePass isn't the only theater subscription service that has faced troubles recently, as this past weekend Sinemia dealt with its own outages due to technical issues. So obviously there are still a lot of bugs to be worked out when it comes to these movie theater subscription services. Nevertheless, as far as MoviePass goes, it's arguably the one getting the most attention, and this Atom Tickets sweepstakes is now offering incentive for MoviePass subscribers to switch to a different service.

Oscars President John Bailey Is Being Investigated For Sexual Misconduct

For the last several months, people in high-powered positions in Hollywood and moviemaking have been ousted after allegations of multiple counts of sexual misconduct. Harvey Weinstein, whose legal battles and investigations or still ongoing, first sparked the movement which has grown quite a bit. While the Academy took quick steps to remove Weinstein from their numbers, they now find themselves with another instance of sexual misconduct from a top tier member on the Board of Governors. John Bailey, the current president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is now under investigation for alleged sexual harassment.

According to Variety, the Academy received three harassment claims on Wednesday. The organization then took immediate steps to open a probe, said sources close to the situation. No specific details about the allegations or who they are from have emerged yet. If John Bailey were to be expelled from the Academy, he would be replaced by Lois Burwell, a veteran makeup artist who is the Academy's vice president, until the next election in July.

John Bailey was elected as president of the Academy in August. His tenure came at a time when the Academy was revamping its membership to be more inclusive and include younger voters to have a more diverse line up of film nominees. The Academy has also been working to shifts its approach to the misconduct of members. In December, the organization set up a code of conduct that allows members to be disciplined for abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

The organization expelled Harvey Weinstein from its rank less than 10 days after the New York Times published an expose revealing Weinstein's deep alleged history of alleged sexual harassment and assault. Casey Affleck, who settled two sexual harassment lawsuits in 2010, was also removed as a presenter for the Best Actress award from this years ceremony, bucking the usual tradition.

Before he was elected as president of the Academy, John Bailey was a cinematographer, and his filmography includes movies such as Groundhog Day and The Big Chill. He was the first below the line leader of the Academy since the 1980s. He had a keen interest in how the crafts would be represented at the Academy, such as a stronger presence at the Academy museum.

The Academy has issued a statement on the matter, and while it cannot comment on an investigation or the identity of the accusers to protect their confidentiality, "The Membership Committee reviews all complaints brought against Academy members according to our Standards of Conduct process, and after completing reviews, reports to the Board of Governors."

Avengers 4 Casting Rumor Raises A Big Question About When The Story Takes Place

Because Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are closely connected to each other (they shot back-to-back last year), Marvel has stayed relatively tight-lipped about the latter movie. Aside from learning which actors will appear in Avengers 4, no official information has come out about what's in store for the final installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Three. However, unofficial reports and rumors have started to paint a picture of what we might see in Avengers 4 next year, and a new rumored casting has us wondering if the movie takes place years after Infinity War.

Like his comic book counterpart, Paul Rudd's Scott Lang, a.k.a. the current Ant-Man, has a daughter named Cassie, who was played by Abby Ryder Fortson in the first Ant-Man movie. Fortson is reprising Cassie Lang later this year in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but according to That Hashtag Show, Emma Fuhrmann, whose credits include The Good Guys, The Fandango Sisters and Blended, is playing Cassie for some scenes in Avengers 4. What makes this more interesting than your average recasting is that Fuhrmann is 16 years old, while Fortson is 10 years old. So if Fuhrmann has indeed been cast as Cassie, that means we'll be seeing a teenaged version of her, and thus that Avengers 4 doesn't pick up immediately after Infinity War.

With Avengers: Infinity War a little over a week away, we're still in the dark as to how that movie sets the stage for Avengers 4. Do our heroes stop Thanos from obtaining the Infinity Stones, or does the Mad Titan successfully end up wiping out half the life in the universe? We don't know yet, but certain reports from last year, such as Black Widow fighting Yakuza and Hawkeye taking the Ronin identity, have implied that some MCU characters will go through notable changes. This tends to happen when years pass, so looking through that lens, meeting an older Cassie Lang makes sense. Perhaps this also means that the older Cassie will be a superhero like she is in the comics, going by either Stature or Stinger.

It's worth mentioning, however, that it may not be a simple time jump where Avengers 4 is concerned. Last year, set photos popped up showing major moments from MCU being recreated. That led to speculation that the movie would include time travel, though directors Joe and Anthony Russo later implied that it's actually Tony Stark's B.A.R.F. technology that's responsible for these scenes. However, that still doesn't necessarily remove time travel or any other kind of temporal shenanigans from the table. After all, the Time Stone is certainly capable of transporting someone to the future, so maybe one or several characters in Avengers 4 are tossed forward in time, and seeing how the future turned out, try to go back to the present to change the timeline.

Let's also not forget that like Hawkeye, we don't know anything about Ant-Man's role in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, although one of last year's set photos showed Paul Rudd suited up as the shrinking/growing superhero next to a S.H.I.E.L.D. jumpsuit-wearing Tony Stark. If Ant-Man and the Wasp is actually set before Infinity War, perhaps the Ant-Man sequel somehow sees Scott being trapped in the Quantum Realm, and when he finally breaks free at the end of Infinity War or Avengers 4, many years have passed. Eventually he would cross paths with his daughter as a teenager, but like in the previously-mentioned time travel scenario, he has to figure out a way to get back to the present day.

This is all just speculation, of course, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more news about Avengers 4, which opens on May 3, 2019. We'll get a better idea of what that movies has to offer once Avengers: Infinity War is released on April 27.
