Jonathan Nolan Had A Great Idea For A Dark Knight Trailer That Chris Refused To Use

Ten years have passed since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight debuted in theaters, and many DC fans consider the full Dark Knight trilogy nearly perfect. Beginning with Batman Begins in 2005 and concluding with The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, the series featured some incredible practical effects and insanely innovative marketing campaigns. The iconic music of Hans Zimmer largely defined these campaigns, but Jonathan Nolan recently opened up and admitted that he spent a decade trying to get his brother to include The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" in a Batman movie trailer. Nolan wrote:

I worked in the movies for years with my brother and he was never very keen on using popular music. Which I totally get. The music he was creating for the films with Hans was so beautiful and purpose built for each moment that it didn't need any help. But I would always have suggestions and thoughts for what music we could be using. I write listening to music (Lisa doesn't -- every writer is different) and I would have these extensive lists of things I thought would work. One example -- I tried for ten years to convince Chris to do a trailer for one of our Batman films using Paint it Black. It's an iconic song, and it's been used before, and I understood why he wasn't interested. But after ten years, I knew I wanted to use that song somewhere... So Ramin and I started talking about how we could use it in the pilot, but adapted for our nefarious purposes.

So it seems that Jonathan Nolan was far more intrigued by the possibility of blending pop culture into The Dark Knight trilogy's marketing campaign than his brother. Though the franchise mostly stuck to the music composed by Hans Zimmer throughout its trailers and previews, the younger Nolan brother consistently pitched the idea of using The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" in the previews for a Batman movie, which, in retrospect, definitely does seem like a fitting song for Batman's corner of the DC lore.

Of course, as Jonathan Nolan mentioned during that Reddit AMA session, he did eventually get to use "Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones in his own project: Westworld. Check out the Westworld rendition of the song, below!

In the end, The Dark Knight trilogy has arguably become timeless because of how disconnected it feels from other forms of pop culture. If anything, the National Anthem used in the trailers for The Dark Knight Rises was the closest thing to pop music ever to make it into a Dark Knight trilogy trailer. With little to no mainstream music or references in the films, Christopher Nolan created movies that now seem to stand the test of time.

That said, the silver screen DC world hasn't come to an end yet. In fact, the DCEU will continue later this year with the premiere on James Wan's Aquaman on December 21!

First Overlord Trailer Is Full Of Nazi Zombies And AC/DC

For a while now, the project known as Overlord has been a bit of a mystery over at the Paramount lot. With a vague premise involving Nazi medical experiments uncovered as the D-Day invasion is raging on, not much was known about J.J. Abrams' next big film as a producer. That changes today, as the first trailer has been unveiled, and it's full of undead Nazis and an AC/DC soundtrack! Rock on yourself, through the trailer below.

Overlord sees a group of American soldiers stranded behind enemy lines, after being shot down by German anti-aircraft guns. But what starts as an episode of Band of Brothers turns into something straight out of Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies mode, as our intrepid crew (full of rising stars such as Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, and Mathilde Ollivier) find themselves in a little village with a big secret. A secret that's tapping into some dangerous stuff, in the name of Hitler's thousand-year Reich.

To compare Overlord to Activision's famous video game experience is a compliment in the highest sense of the word. Director Julius Avery's horror thriller looks to have taken the basic bones of the Nazi Zombies experience and turned it into a rip-roaring horror/action hybrid. It could just be the editing of the trailer, but watching Overlord sell its overall product is a sight to behold. Not to mention, it's a treat for the ears, as someone finally decided to dig a little deeper into the AC/DC catalog and pull "Hell's Bells" out to really tie this trailer together.

Sadly, it still looks like Overlord is, in fact, not a Cloverfield movie. Which is a shame, considering what we've just seen looks like it'd fit into the universe as organically as fellow whisper candidate A Quiet Place would have. Come to think of it, with that point in mind, it feels like Paramount is dead set on reinventing itself as a genre-friendly home. In a year that's given us The Cloverfield Paradox, as well as John Krasinski's directorial debut of horrors, Overlord feels like another step towards crowd-pleasing adventure for the recently beleaguered studio. And if this film lives up to even half of the potential it's shown us, there's a chance that this could be a breakout hit of the fall.

Overlord puts its zombies where its mouth is on November 9th. However, if you want to scare up even more fun throughout 2018, take a look at this year's release schedule to see what's lurking in the shadows.

It's called Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead and it brings Zombie russian army into the mix to battle the Nazi zombies. It is a ridiculously good time. It's also in English rather than Norwegian, not that the language was a turn off for me.

Copies Of Fifty Shades Of Grey Were Stolen At A Book Club Movie Party

The new film Book Club follows four older women as they discover the sexy world of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey. You'd think everybody who was interested has read that book by now, but apparently not. A recent promotional event for the new included several copies of Fifty Shades being set out throughout the event, and by the time the party was over, most of the books were apparently gone.

The event took place in New York City at Omar at Vaucluse and was attended by members of the Cinema Society. Several members of the Book Club cast, including Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, and Don Johnson were in attendance and I'm really hoping none of them were the ones involved in the apparent mass theft of copies of Fifty Shades of Grey that took place, according to Page Six.

Since Book Club is all about a group of women who read the book, and how it affects their lives, it makes sense that copies of it would be used as decorations. Maybe the assumption was made that if you're interested in attending an event about a movie where people read the book, you're already familiar with the book in question. The novel, originally based on Twilight fan fiction, was released in 2011, so people have had plenty of time to pick up their own copies, or even to watch the movies based on the books if you aren't much of a reader.

If somehow everybody who absconded with a copy of Fifty Shades has never actually read the book, then I certainly hope they had a good time with it.

It's a pretty humorous image when you think about it. Much like the characters of Book Club, one assumes this party featured a selection of middle-aged women who stole the books. Each one, likely independent of the others, each looking around to make sure nobody is watching before slipping the book into her bag. Bonus points if they got one of the celebrities in attendance to autograph "their" copy of the book before running off with one of the party decorations.

As far as the movie goes, Book Club opened this past weekend in third place behind the comic book double act of Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War. While it may have only brought in $12 million, with a budget a microscopic fraction of the competition, it probably is doing just fine and is attracting an audience that probably would not see comic book movies, anyway.

If you haven't actually read Fifty Shades of Grey and want to do that before seeing Book Club, it is actually for sale at stores and online, there's no need to steal it.
